too right! what ever happened to meaningful discussion among opposing views without questioning the integrity or intelligence of the person with the opposing opinions? it's like we feel that we must criticize personally, in order to make our point... i don't get it.

and I agree that good sportsmanship is related. if we can't teach our kids to compete in a game without making it personal, we'll never make it in the civil debate department.

can you get right on this, please? :)

We have tried to teach this to our boys. We have also tried to teach them to listen to others that ask them to stop. I will add these words to our lesson. Thanks for the reminder.

I've also struggled with our focus on the cross. Whenever I listen to hymns or contemporary Christian praise music celebrating or "giving thanks" for the cross, I just balk. The cross was an implement of torture, on which a dear friend died. When I think of it, I don't feel celebratory. I feel ashamed.

What matters, I think, is not that Jesus served as a scapegoat. It is that even in the height of his suffering, the grace that filled him was unbroken. It is that Spirit of grace and forgiveness that saves.

The cross is worth keeping around for the reasons you articulate...it's a reminder of our "need for God's redeeming grace."

I used to do that too! It must make you feel good to know that you have raised her to be a reader. I hope my boys (and girl!!!!) will be readers too. I can't get enough. Just started "The Help" by Kathryn Stockett and I can't put it down. So interesting! Hope you survived this week. Sounded a little tough on FB.

Kerri,

Thanks for reading Tribal Church, and thanks for such a great recommendation!

Aaahhh... if only every review had the command, "Read it. Now."

Enjoy your summer of reading! Right now, I'm in the midst of "How God Changes Your Brain." It's really good so far.

I echo Marci. And as the mother of two sons who are both soldiers - and officer and an enilisted man - who holds view on war similar to both you and Marci, I also pray for peace and safety for all the men and women I know who are presently serving.
